Eternally at the mercy of the muses, I work in a wild variety of art forms including unusual gemstone jewelry, herbal enchantments, henna body art, acrylic and watercolor paintings, pen and ink drawings, mixed media and assemblage. A passion for nature, history and my heritage influence my work.
I live, breathe and create in the western Catskill Mountains with my best friend/ husband, Chris, on our 45 acre homestead. In 2021 we celebrated 35 years together.
Just a girl raised on an island with a love for family, art and history.
My grandfather's family is from Henna and Palermo in Sicily (a Mediterranean island famous for its volcano, lemons, cannoli, brightly painted carretti and maiolica). The city of Henna was named over 3,000 years ago and the henna plant was documented in Palermo over 1,000 years ago. Even my name, Jeanette, is a variant of the word henna.
Henna and I were connected by the Fates and that has captivated my heart and inspires my art.
You'll find a great variety of henna styles (Moroccan, Indian, Persian, etc.) happily offered at Island Girl as I've studied with world-renown henna artists. Henna is part of my Sicilian heritage so I place a high standard on quality and professionalism.
Sicily’s henna history dates back over 1,000 years. To illuminate this, I'm combining heritage and innovation to pioneer a modern henna style rooted in Sicily's ancient and diverse past - before our history is forever lost.
When the pandemic hit, my ethnic Mediterranean-style paintings emerged, every brushstroke influenced by my deep Sicilian roots. Additional painting styles include landscapes, seascapes, still life and other vibrant and fantasy scenes.
Where fashion and fads try to keep everyone looking the same, I'm busy creating jewelry, hair accessories, crowns and other unusual wearables to help everyone look fabulous and eccentric. Dare to be different with these subtle-to-bold conversation starters.
Island Girl is a woman-owned, small, independent business established in 2009.
Decades of business experience and artistic abilities have created a successful art career that broke the 'starving artist' mold.
In a world full of fly-by-night henna artists, I take pride in standing out as a professional in the art industry. That's why Island Girl is a registered and insured business.
We reduce, reuse, recycle + refuse single-use as much as possible + give back whenever we can for the good of the planet.
This 7'x10' roving micro house serves as our accommodations with all the necessary amenities while at multi-day festivals.
